The Arab Network for Environment and Development (RAED) attended a celebration organised by Egypt’s National Council for Women to mark the International Day of Rural Women. Held under the title “Rural Women: Partners in Development and Shapers of the Future,” the event reflected growing attention to strengthening rural women’s roles, advancing their economic and social empowerment, and supporting their contributions to sustainable development and food security.
The celebration was attended by Counsellor Amal Ammar, President of the National Council for Women; Mary Louis, Council Member and Rapporteur of its Rural Women Committee; Dr Amani Asfour, Council Member; and Engineer Mostafa El-Sayyad, Deputy Minister of Agriculture for Livestock, Fisheries and Poultry, alongside experts, members of the Rural Women Committee and representatives of relevant bodies.
The event highlighted experiences and initiatives aimed at empowering rural women economically, developing their skills, and supporting small enterprises, agricultural processing and the recycling of agricultural waste. Discussions also addressed ways to strengthen women’s participation in the green economy, creating greater opportunities to increase production, improve incomes and support family and community stability.
The celebration also featured a panel discussion titled “From Skills to Impact: The Success Journeys of Our Country’s Women,” moderated by Dr Hala Yousry, a member of the Council’s Rural Women Committee. The session showcased examples of turning skills and local resources into sustainable economic opportunities. A documentary titled “Her Story… From Her Land, a Nation’s Story” was also screened, highlighting inspiring Egyptian women who have made a tangible difference in their communities.
The event concluded with the recognition of inspiring rural women from governorates across Egypt in appreciation of their contributions to economic and community development. Attendees also toured an exhibition of handicrafts and food products made by women.
RAED’s attendance underscored the importance of coordinated efforts between state institutions and civil society to support rural women, strengthen their ability to address environmental and economic challenges, and expand their participation in sustainable development, the green economy and the protection of natural resources.
