Under the TeraMed Initiative: National Seminar in Tataouine, Southern Tunisia, Supports the Energy Transition

The Higher Institute of Technological Studies in Tataouine, southern Tunisia, hosted a regional seminar on the National Energy Transition Strategy, as part of the activities of the TeraMed Clean Energy Initiative, launched by the Arab Network for Environment and Development (RAED). The event brought together a distinguished group of experts, academics, representatives of public institutions, civil society organizations, and students.

The seminar was organized at the initiative of Development Without Borders Association, a member of RAED, in partnership with the Higher Institute of Technological Studies in Tataouine, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen community dialogue on the transition towards clean energy and support pathways for sustainable development in Tunisia and the Southern Mediterranean countries.

The event witnessed broad youth participation, reflecting the growing interest of young people in southern Tunisia in climate and energy issues, as well as their commitment to contributing to a more sustainable development model based on environmental justice. The seminar was also marked by scientific discussions and specialized interventions addressing the challenges of the energy transition, ways to promote greater reliance on renewable energy sources, and the role that universities and civil society organizations can play in supporting environmental and development policies.

The seminar included a presentation on the objectives of the TeraMed Initiative, which aims to increase renewable energy production capacity across the Mediterranean Basin to one terawatt by 2030. This will be pursued through enhanced regional cooperation in clean energy across the Mediterranean space, while emphasizing Tunisia’s important role in advancing energy transition efforts and strengthening environmental partnerships in the region.

Participants also reviewed a number of successful local experiences and initiatives in the fields of energy and climate, stressing the need to engage young people and academic institutions in supporting the energy transition process, given their vital role as drivers of innovation and creators of sustainable solutions to today’s environmental challenges.

At the conclusion of the seminar, the organizers commended the strong level of engagement and participation shown by experts, students, and representatives of partner institutions. They also expressed their appreciation to the administration of the Higher Institute of Technological Studies for its cooperation and excellent organization, reaffirming the importance of continuing joint efforts to achieve a just and sustainable energy transition in Tunisia and the Arab region.
