Dr. Emad Adly: The TeraMed Initiative Aims to Generate 1 Terawatt of Clean Energy in the Mediterranean Region by 2030

Arab Network for Environment and Development “RAED” held a consultative session Monday 21st October, titled “TeraMed Campaign: Opportunities and Challenges.” The session was attended by a group of scientists and experts in the fields of renewable energy, economics, environment, sustainable development, as well as media professionals. The “TeraMed” initiative was launched during the Cairo Sustainable Energy Week 2024, and it is being implemented by a coalition of organizations with aligned visions from across the Mediterranean region, supported by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), and the Global Renewables Alliance.

Dr. Emad Adly, General Coordinator of the Arab Network for Environment and Development (RAED), stated that the Mediterranean region serves as a global crossroads, linking the world’s largest market economy (the European Union) with the world’s fastest-growing population (Africa). The Mediterranean is also one of the most climate-vulnerable regions. Despite its vast potential for renewable energy development, Mediterranean countries lack a shared vision, clear commitments and coordinated efforts to advance global decarbonization goals. Historically, the Mediterranean has played a strategic role in global energy dynamics, particularly through the exploitation of fossil fuels. Today, the transition to decarbonization requires a rapid and just shift from fossil fuels to clean energy.

Additionally, Adly explained that the regional goal of TeraMed initiative is to produce 1 terawatt of clean energy by 2030, while the global goal is to generate 11 terawatts, with the support of the Global Renewables Alliance and IRENA.
