“Water and Environment Support” Launches a Regional Activity to Strengthen Marine Litter Monitoring Mechanisms in the Mediterranean
The Water and Environment Support – Biodiversity and Climate Action (WES-BCA) Project organized an online meeting on 12 November 2025 to launch one of its key regional activities under the project’s work plan, which is being implemented in several Mediterranean Basin countries, with the participation of the Arab Network for Environment and Development (RAED) and with funding from the European Union.
The activity, entitled “Contribution to Monitoring and Reporting Programmes for the Prevention and Reduction of Marine Litter,” aims to support Mediterranean countries in strengthening the coordinated implementation of marine litter monitoring programmes in all their components, contributing to improved reporting procedures and pollution reduction measures, in line with the Regional Plan for Marine Litter Management under the Barcelona Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Mediterranean.
The meeting, which brought together all relevant stakeholders, representatives of partner countries and project experts, discussed the proposed work plan and implementation mechanisms. The environmental expert team also delivered a presentation on the planned activities to national focal points and country representatives.
The WES-BCA Project is being implemented through a consortium of several regional organizations, including RAED, the Mediterranean Information Office for Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development (MIO-ECSDE), the Association of Cities and Regions for Sustainable Resource Management, the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute, the MedWaves Center in addition to, the Mediterranean Action Plan on Sustainable Consumption and Production.
This new phase builds on the previously implemented Water and Environment Support (WES) Project, which seeks to strengthen environmental protection, restore biodiversity, manage scarce water resources and enhance climate change adaptation capacities. The project also contributes to supporting and implementing environmental policies in partner countries within the framework of the two regional policy structures: the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) and the Barcelona Convention.
