Launch of the “TeraMed” Renewable Energy Initiative in Jordan to Support Local Community Development

Bani Obeid Association for Environment and Sustainable Development, a member of the Arab Network for Environment and Development (RAED) in Jordan, officially launched the TeraMed Initiative in cooperation with network members across the Kingdom on Saturday, April 4, 2026. The launch took place during a national workshop titled “Utilizing Renewable and Clean Energy in Local Community Development”, held at Al-Husn Sports and Cultural Club Hall, under the patronage of Member of Parliament Dr. Abdelnasser Hashem Al-Khasawneh.

The national workshop began with participant registration and reception, followed by the official opening session featuring welcome remarks from several distinguished speakers, including Eng. Jamal Nayef Abu Obeid, President of Bani Obeid Association; Dr. Zaid Al-Zureikat, Vice President of the Jordanian Association for Combating Desertification and Badia Development; Eng. Islam Mohammed Al-Maghayreh, TeraMed Initiative Coordinator in Jordan; and MP Dr. Abdelnasser Al-Khasawneh.

The workshop included two main sessions addressing key renewable energy issues. The first session, chaired by Dr. Fakher Al-Akour, Professor at the Hashemite University and Vice President of Bani Obeid Association, featured a working paper presented by Dr. Ziad Al-Ghazawi on the role of renewable energy in mitigating climate change impacts and nature-based solutions. Dr. Mazen Marji delivered a lecture on the economic importance of clean energy, while Dr. Mohammad Al-Ta’ani presented a working paper on smart cities, renewable energy, and green buildings.

The second session, chaired by Eng. Khaled Al-Marafi, Advisor to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) for West Asia, included a lecture by Dr. Ismat Thalji Haddad on the role of environmental media in raising awareness about renewable energy. Eng. Dina Hussein Shahrour presented a working paper on green hydrogen as a new revolution in the energy sector, while Dr. Ziad Al-Alawneh presented a paper on greening public buildings as local models for adaptation to resource scarcity.

The TeraMed Initiative aims to expand renewable energy deployment across the Mediterranean region to reach one terawatt (1 TW) by 2030. The Arab Network for Environment and Development (RAED) coordinates civil society organizations across the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean by identifying opportunities and harnessing the region’s vast renewable energy potential to achieve a more ambitious and equitable energy transition. This effort contributes to strengthening stability, security, and sustainability in the medium and long term, while supporting social and economic development across the Mediterranean region and expanding mutual benefits to include partners in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.
