First Time: Presentation of the “TeraMed” Initiative at a Climate Change Conference in Ramallah

For the first time, the Palestinian city of Ramallah hosted a presentation of the “TeraMed” Initiative during a specialized session within the Climate Change Conference, held under the supervision of the Environment Quality Authority. The session highlighted the initiative’s regional objectives aimed at accelerating the transition to clean energy in the Mediterranean Basin.

The session featured a presentation by environmental media expert Ibrahim Ouda, Media Director at the Wildlife Association and a member of the Arab Network for Environment and Development (RAED) in Palestine. He outlined the goals and strategic dimensions of the TeraMed Initiative, explaining that it forms part of a regional pathway to accelerate the energy transition in Mediterranean countries, strengthen energy security, and support climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts.

Ouda emphasized that the TeraMed Initiative seeks to raise total renewable energy production in Mediterranean countries to one terawatt by 2030, within an integrated vision to enhance the contribution of clean energy sources to the national energy mix, in line with national climate action plans and carbon emission reduction commitments.

The initiative focuses on promoting supportive policies and legislation for renewable energy, strengthening regional cooperation among Mediterranean countries, and stimulating investment in clean energy projects through private sector engagement. It also encourages innovation and technological development in solar and wind energy, expands access to clean electricity—particularly in underserved communities—enhances climate justice, and ensures a more equitable distribution of the benefits of the energy transition, while supporting the implementation of national climate strategies.

The session witnessed strong engagement from participants, many of whom expressed their support for the initiative, noting that this was the first time they had received a detailed presentation on its objectives and implementation mechanisms. This reflects the need to intensify awareness-raising and communication efforts at both national and regional levels to strengthen its presence on the climate agenda.

The Arab Network for Environment and Development (RAED) is leading the coordination of the initiative among civil society organizations in the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean, within a multi-stakeholder partnership framework that includes international organizations, national governments, civil society institutions, renewable energy companies, and several regional organizations supporting the energy transition pathway.
