Training Program for Fishermen in Arish as Part of the Marine Turtle Conservation Initiative
The Sinai Women’s Rights Association in North Sinai conducted a training program for fishermen in the city of Arish as part of the Marine Turtle Conservation Project. This initiative falls under the Small-Scale Initiatives Program in North Africa (PPI OSCAN3), implemented by the association in collaboration with the Arab Network for Environment and Development (RAED) and the Mediterranean Cooperation Office of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
The training program, which witnessed significant participation from local fishermen in Arish, focused on highlighting the vital role of marine turtles in maintaining biodiversity and ecological balance. Marine turtles help control jellyfish populations as they feed on them, thereby contributing to a reduction in their spread, which positively impacts fish stock abundance. The program also emphasized the importance of fishermen’s contributions to marine turtle conservation efforts by adopting sustainable fishing practices that align with marine environmental standards.
