Capacity-Building and Awareness Training on Marine Turtle Protection in Al-Arish

As part of the third phase of the “Small-Scale Initiatives Program for Civil Society Organizations (PPI OSCAN3)”, implemented by the Arab Network for Environment and Development (RAED) in collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Women’s Rights Association of Sinai organized a training and awareness workshop addressing various environmental issues. The workshop highlighted the protection of marine turtles and biodiversity, as well as the challenges they face amid environmental and economic changes, under the initiative “Protecting Marine Turtles in Al-Arish to Preserve Biodiversity.”

The two-day training program engaged the project team, aiming to enhance their capabilities in project management, future planning, and funders engagement, while raising awareness about environmental issues related to marine turtle conservation.

The training emphasized marine environment preservation, particularly the endangered Marine Turtle species. Experts discussed with the team methods to measure the project’s success, including increased turtle populations, heightened community environmental awareness, and strengthened collaboration with partner organizations.

A brainstorming session was also held during the workshop, focusing on creating a theatrical production depicting the plight of marine turtles and environmental challenges arising from harmful practices, such as the surge in jellyfish populations and their negative impact on tourism and children. The session highlighted the critical role of marine turtles in restoring ecological balance.

Additionally, the training covered effective environmental project management, emphasizing team coordination, leadership hierarchy, and fostering horizontal and vertical communication for integration. Key challenges, such as the target audience’s limited understanding of project goals, were addressed. Strategies were proposed to simplify messaging, emphasize short-term results to encourage sustainable commitment, and attract volunteers amidst economic hardships. Participants suggested innovative methods to motivate youth, such as offering training and professional development opportunities.

The workshop concluded with a call for collective community and institutional efforts to ensure the success of environmental initiatives in Sinai, underscoring the importance of sustaining activities to raise awareness and protect the marine environment for future generations.
