RAED Network Advances the “Sustainable Energy” Initiative with Practical Models for Climate Security
The shift towards renewable energy sources offers significant environmental benefits, including mitigating the impacts of climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. As the world increasingly embraces sustainable practices, Egypt’s commitment to clean energy aligns with global efforts to curb climate change and enhance societal resilience.
In this context, the Arab Network for Environment and Development (RAED) launched an initiative titled “Sustainable Energy in Egypt: Integrating Renewable Energy to Achieve Climate Security”, in partnership with the European Climate Foundation. The initiative aims to influence governmental policies and actions regarding renewable energy, promote its adoption and usage, and support climate security in Egypt. It also advocates for the integration of renewable energy within local governance systems, encourages a sustainable and efficient energy transition, and empowers civil society to drive government and private sector decisions toward sustainable development and energy efficiency. The initiative calls on government entities, private sector actors, and civil society to adopt effective strategies and practices that support access to renewable energy.
Building on prior local and national discussions under the initiative around “Alternative Energy Policies for a Sustainable Future”, which yielded several key recommendations, the initiative moved to the implementation phase through a practical model designed to strengthen and stimulate mechanisms for achieving climate security.
In collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Maadi El-Gedida Youth Center in Cairo Governorate was selected as a launch point for transforming youth centers into sustainable green institutions. As part of this transformation, the initiative oversaw the installation of a 10-kilowatt solar power station, contributing further to climate security efforts in Egypt.
In parallel, RAED has worked on building the capacities of youth leaders and members of the Maadi El-Gedida Youth Center by raising awareness about the importance of renewable energy use. The initiative also seeks to expand youth’s understanding of the value and potential of green jobs, and how such opportunities can contribute to the creation of new, sustainable employment across emerging sectors.
