Sustainable Egypt Energy Initiative: Mainstreaming Renewable Energy for Climate Security
This project aims to support Egypt’s transition to renewable energy by promoting policies, investments, and capacity-building initiatives. It seeks to mitigate the risks associated with fossil fuel dependence, such as price volatility and geopolitical uncertainties, while enhancing national energy security. Expanding renewable energy will also contribute to global climate change mitigation efforts by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The project will foster economic growth by creating job opportunities, attracting investments, and driving innovation in key sectors such as manufacturing, construction, and technology. It will also enhance electricity access in remote and underserved areas through off-grid and decentralized renewable solutions.
Egypt has introduced various policies, such as feed-in tariffs and regulatory frameworks, to attract private investment in renewables. Additionally, the country launched its Climate Change Strategy 2050 in May 2022, ahead of hosting COP27, to reinforce its climate commitments. However, effective implementation of this strategy requires stronger national and local promotion, as well as capacity-building efforts for local executives and stakeholders.
