RAED’s Distinguished Participation in the Regional Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction in Kuwait
The Arab Network for Environment and Development (RAED) participated in the Sixth Arab Regional Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction, organized by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) in collaboration with the League of Arab States and the State of Kuwait, from February 9th to 12th, 2025. Held under the theme “Building Resilient Arab Communities: From Understanding to Action,” the forum brought together representatives of Arab governments, civil society organizations, UN agencies, international organizations, financial institutions, the private sector and academic & research institutions.
The forum focused on monitoring and assessing the progress made by Arab countries in implementing the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and the Arab Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction 2030. It also aimed to define regional priorities for the next two years. During the forum, participants adopted the “Kuwait Declaration” and the 2025-2027 Action Plan.
The meeting served as an opportunity to evaluate past outcomes, particularly through the “Rabat Declaration,” which emphasized the need to accelerate the implementation of the Sendai Framework’s goals and priorities. It also underscored the importance of enhancing and developing Arab policies for disaster risk reduction that consider the impacts of climate change, aligning with the objectives of sustainable development. Additionally, the forum encouraged investment in disaster risk reduction programs through an integrated and participatory approach that engages stakeholders from government agencies, legislative bodies, universities, training and research centers, media institutions, civil society organizations and the private sector.
As a key outcome, participants adopted a regional strategy for disaster risk reduction, encapsulated in the “Kuwait Declaration.” This declaration reflects the commitment of Arab countries to accelerating the implementation of the Sendai Framework and the Arab Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction over the next three years across the region.
