A new warning on “World Food Day”: 130 million people are on the “brink of famine”

International relief organizations and United Nations humanitarian agencies renewed their warnings about the worsening problems of “hunger” and food insecurity in various parts of the world, as these organizations estimated the number of people standing on the brink of hunger at about 130 million people.

In a message on the occasion of World Food Day, which falls on October 16 of each year, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, said that about 130 million people may be pushed to the “brink of famine” by the end of this year, in addition to the 690 million people who already lack food. To adequate food, meanwhile, more than 3 billion people cannot afford a healthy diet.

The Secretary-General of the International Organization considered that the decision of the Nobel Peace Prize Committee to award this year’s prize to the World Food Programme, affiliated with the United Nations, is “a recognition of the right of all people to food, and of our common endeavor to eliminate hunger… in a world of abundance, it is “It is an extreme insult that hundreds of millions of people go to bed hungry every night.”

While the “Covid-19 pandemic” exacerbated the situation of food insecurity in the world, as it fell to the lowest level not seen in decades, the Secretary-General went on in his message on the occasion of World Food Day, saying: “As we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the Food And Agriculture of the United Nations (FAO)… We need to intensify our efforts to achieve the vision of the Sustainable Development Goals,” he explained, “This means a future in which every person, everywhere, gets the nutrition they need.”

Guterres pointed out that the United Nations intends to hold a food systems summit next year, in order to stimulate work to achieve this vision, calling for the importance of making food systems more resistant to fluctuations and climate shocks. He added: “We must ensure sustainable food systems.” And healthy for all, and to reduce food waste to a minimum… We need food systems that provide decent and safe livelihoods for workers… We have the know-how and the ability to create a more equitable, sustainable and resilient world.” The Secretary-General of the United Nations called, in concluding his message, To the necessity of adhering to the slogan raised by the FAO on the 75th anniversary of its founding, which is “Together we grow, nourish and maintain sustainability.”
